Intel announced that in the third quarter of 2024, its new client processors called “Lunar Lake” will power more than 80 new notebook models from 20 different OEMs, introducing artificial intelligence capabilities on a global scale to Copilot+ computers.

Lunar Lake processor for AI PCs

The Lunar Lake processor is expected to revolutionize AI computing by delivering more than three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation.

With more than 40 tera operations per second (TOPS) for neural processing units (NPUs), Intel's next-generation processors will facilitate Copilot+ experiences.

Along with the improved NPU, Lunar Lake will feature more than 60 TOPS graphics processing units (GPUs), resulting in more than 100 platform TOPS.

Additionally, Intel has confirmed that Lunar Lake will receive Copilot+ features like Recall via an upcoming update.

Intel Lunar Lake processor specifications

Intel has revamped all of Lunar Lake's computational components, incorporating faster central processing unit (CPU) and NPU cores, a redesigned low-power island (LPI), and a new integrated GPU using the Xe2 architecture.

Despite its focus on AI, Intel hasn't overlooked gaming, as the Xe2 iGPU is expected to deliver 1.5x the performance of current-generation Meteor Lake chips.

The Arrow Lake series, which will likely share CPU architectures with Lunar Lake, will provide improved performance for desktops and laptops. Comprised of three tiles/chiplets, Lunar Lake integrates the Lion Cove and Skymont microarchitectures for performance and efficiency cores, respectively.

The Lunar Lake NPU will deliver over 45 TOPS, supporting AI workloads and exceeding the requirements for next-generation AI PCs set by Microsoft.

The integrated GPU will support Intel Xe Matrix eXtensions (XMX), improving AI performance up to 60 TOPS. Overall, Lunar Lake promises over 100 TOPS of total AI performance.

Performance Lunar Lake

Intel's performance claims for Lunar Lake, while promising, are based on limited benchmarks and should be interpreted with caution.

Reference points

  • Benchmarks provided by Intel suggest that Lunar Lake offers a significant increase in AI performance (1.4x) over competitors such as Snapdragon X Elite and Ryzen 7 8840U in GIMP benchmark results.
  • Synthetic benchmarks indicate 1.5x more gaming performance compared to the current generation iGPU on Meteor Lake Core 7 165U, although real-world gaming benchmarks remain to be seen.

Battery life and energy efficiency

  • Battery life tests highlight Lunar Lake's efficiency, showing up to 30% lower active power consumption compared to competitors such as Ryzen 7 7840U and Snapdragon 8CX Gen3.
Lunar Lake Artificial Intelligence Software Ecosystem

Intel has the largest AI PC install base and aims to sell 100 million AI PCs by the end of 2025. They highlight the importance of software and drivers to maximize performance, highlighting investments in AI software and hardware developer ecosystems.

Intel supports over 500 AI models, with Day 0 support plans for new models and features. The NPU is integrated into various applications for tasks such as deepfake detection and threat detection, improving performance and efficiency.

Intel plans to ship more than 40 million Lunar Lake processors by 2024, expanding its presence in the AI PC market. Lunar Lake wafer production is ongoing, with a release slated for Q3 aimed at ensuring the laptops are available for the holiday retail season.
